Since May 9, the Museum of Oriental Art of Venice is hosting Keita Miyazaki – From Water To Form, a solo exhibition by the Japanese artist, curated by Pier Paolo Scelsi, Ilaria Cera, and Riccardo Freddo, with scientific direction by Elisabetta Barisoni, Marta Boscolo Marchi, Daniele Ferrara, and Stefania Portinari. The exhibition is promoted by the National Museums of Veneto region Office – Museum of Oriental Art, Rosenfeld Gallery, and CREA – Cantieri del Contemporaneo, and is held under the patronage of the Consulate General of Japan in Milan and the Japan Foundation.
As a natural evolution of his research centered on water, Miyazaki’s work arrives in Venice—a city suspended between matter and transformation, between the liquid element and architecture—taking shape as an exhibition project that intertwines different times, geographies, and sensibilities. In From Water To Form, water, as an original presence, a generative principle, and a transformative force, becomes both a key interpretive lens and a symbolic material, capable of destruction and regeneration, erosion and fertility. It inscribes within matter and collective memory a continuous cycle of dissolution and rebirth. This element permeates both Japanese culture and the very identity of Venice.
Within the context of the Museum of Oriental Art at Ca’ Pesaro—a landmark institution embodying Venice’s history and cultural openness, and home to one of Europe’s most significant collections of Japanese Edo-period art—the project acquires an additional layer of resonance. Venice itself functions as a natural curatorial device: a city built on water, a crossroads of exchange between Europe and Asia, and a place where cultures, materials, and techniques have met and transformed one another over the centuries.
The exhibition ultimately extends beyond the museum spaces through a public art intervention at CREA – Cantieri del Contemporaneo, located on the island of Giudecca, also curated by Pier Paolo Scelsi, Ilaria Cera, and Riccardo Freddo.
